“I’m a newly qualified occupational therapist, currently working within a mental health rehabilitation setting.
The scope of our profession is broad, within the UK we work in many settings across the public, private and third sectors.
I work within a large team, including mental health nurses, healthcare support workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.
As occupational therapists, everything we do should be focused upon occupation. We use it as the way we gather information on how an individual currently engages in the things that they need, want and have to do to support their health and wellbeing. Engaging in a particular occupation could also be someone’s end goal, and we can support them by identifying and breaking down barriers to that. As everyone is individual, their goals should be too. This means my working day can vary between cooking, gardening, doing a weekly food shop, attending meetings and budgeting for activities. Outside of my working hours I enjoy walking, being outside and spending time with my friends and family.”
